Robert Oliver Ragland was born in Chicago July 3, 1931. He revelaed his talent for musical expression as a boy, playing the piano at the age of five and organizing dance bands during his school years. The decision to write music for films came much later.   He attended Northwestern University and also earned degrees at the Academy of Music in Vienna. He served as a music arranger for the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra in his early years.

At 39 he moved to California and plunged into the Hollywood music pool.  The odds to succeed were overwhelming but evidence speaks for itself. In five years time Ragland established himself as a thorough craftsman in the highly specialized field of film scoring.

He is best known for his soundtracks to numerous genre films ranging from blaxploitation (Abby), to horror (Mansion of the Doomed, The Supernaturals), to monster movies (Q, Grizzly), to thrillers (10 to Midnight) and action films (Assassination, Messenger of Death). Throughout his career, he worked with cult filmmakers including William Girdler, Menahem Golan, Larry Cohen, and J. Lee Thompson.

He died in Los Angeles 2012 atthe age of 81.
