Greetings Infernal, introduce Desaster to our readers, for those who have not yet encountered your raging metal.
DESASTER was unleashed in the year 1989 and since then we brought traditional Black Metal to the worldwide hordes of unholy metalmaniacs!
The band progressed a lot like it is logical for every band that has potential yet the spirit of Desaster is still very faithful to its origins, what is the formula that makes Desaster such a formidable tight act?
Well, I think itīs quite easy: we are FANS of the music and donīt consider us as musicians. The reason to form the band in 1989 was to follow the path bands like Venom, Hellhammer, Sodom, Destruction etc. had walked before and still itīs the spirit and power of Heavy Metal music that keeps our engine run! No commercial interests, only our love for the Gods of Metal keeps us alive! So of course we make no compromises, we are total Metal fundamentalists !!!!!
NO compromises indeed and that is the way it should be, far too many bands lost their spirit and identity, some for lack of inspiration or simply chose to compromise, however there is a fistful of bands that like Desaster stayed true to the original spirit, Sabbat come first to mind in this case, tell us more about how you guys got to do the collaboration a while back and which other bands according to you still hold high the banners
Indeed SABBAT from Japan are true brothers and real Metal warriors! We got in contact because we once were on the same label (IRON PEGASUS REC) and met for the first time in 1997 on a gig in Germany. Our drummer Tormentor then joined the German/Japanese project METALUCIFER and since then a regular contact took place. Ask Gezol about his several visitings in Germany, he loves german "Bratwurst", hehe! Through our 25 years of existence we have met many many people, true and false ones, other bloodbrothers are the guys of dutch PENTACLE which just joined us to celebrate our 25th birthday. There are other great bands that still carry the old spirit, like for example ABSU, PRIMORDIAL, MORTUARY DRAPE, DESTROYER 666...
Hell yes! what a bunch of great bands indeed! Spiritwise I know the approach is the same but mentalwise what's the difference in the way you approach a live gig and a studio recording?
Itīs a big difference: studio work is real hard work, but live gigs is to enjoy and party with the fans! What can be better than to drink and celebrate the Metal Gods together with other crazy metalheads?! We are not that kind of technical band that wants to show the audiance how good they are on their instruments, so we give more attention on the live show and also accept some mistakes and I think a DESASTER fans also excuses these mistakes! But on a recoding you of course have to be very concentrated and serious because itīs for eternity! This certain pressure we feel at the studio is on one side stressful, but on the other side it brings us to our maximum !
And you do succeed well indeed in both endaevors! From the very start you have had a pretty personal distinct sound, that very unique Teutonic Metal sound! On your webpage you mention a new album for 2014, any tips on what are we to expect or not to expect from it?
Well, donīt expect any "musical progression" ! Bands who say that normally just wimped out and play crap music ! DESASTER always played a good mixture of all our favourite Metal styles, no matter if iiīs Speed Metal, Thrash Metal, Death or Black. Perhaps on some albums the "black" influences are bigger, for example "Tyrants of the Netherworld" and our latest album "The arts of destruction". So perhaps the new album will be more epic and slower...but we always donīt know, we donīt "plan" our songs or records, it comes out quite naturally during the songwriting process. We have 3 new songs almost ready but I donīt know if we will release a new album already in 2014, perhaps it will be in 2015...
